When it comes to moving, many people will have advice on what you should do leading up to your move, but what about on the day of? You may be expecting to load all of your boxes into a truck, move to your new home, unload, and start unpacking, but there may be more to it than that. If that’s the case, it’s important to be prepared, especially if you run into some snags along the way. In today’s post, we will discuss five essential items that you need for your move to help set yourself up for success.

An Overnight Bag
Many people are under the impression that after a long day of moving they will be able to unpack just the right boxes so that they can have a nice meal and go to bed in their cozy clothes and sheets. However, that’s often not the case. After lifting heavy boxes, driving any number of hours, and then unloading those same heavy boxes, the last thing you want to do is search through your boxes trying to find your pajamas, soap, and anything else you might need to go to sleep happy. For this reason, we recommend packing an overnight bag with everything you will need for the first night and the next day in your new home. Then, once you’ve finished depositing the last box into your new home, you’ll have everything you need in one convenient bag so that you can shower, relax, and enjoy your first night while saving the unpacking for the next day.
Cleaning supplies are another necessary item that is often overlooked when it comes to moving. When you move into your new home, you may find that the previous owners didn’t do as good of a job cleaning up as you thought they might, or you may even see a spot that needs a quick clean as you’re packing up your old house. Whatever the case may be, you don’t want to have to go through your boxes in search of cleaning supplies, or even worse, make a trip to the store just to buy supplies you already have. Instead, keep a few essential cleaning items out so that you can quickly clean up any necessary areas before you leave or when you arrive at your new abode.
Snacks and Water
Moving is a rigorous process, regardless of how far you’re actually moving. For this reason, it’s only natural to assume that once you’re done packing everything up, everyone is going to be a little tired, hungry, and thirsty. If you have friends or family members helping you move, it may be a good idea to thank them for their help with snacks and water at the very least. Even if you don’t plan on having anyone help you, it’s a good idea to have some sort of snacks and water on hand for you and your family after all the heavy lifting is done, as well as food that you can eat in your new home should you get hungry.
Whether you’re taking some of your furniture apart or you’re putting it back together in your new home, it’s important to have your tool kit out and ready on moving day. With that in mind, it’s not necessary to have all the tools you own out, but you should have the necessities such as allen wrenches, a flat-head and a Phillips-head screwdriver, a hammer, and some tape so that you can tape any loose screws to the items they go with, as well as any other tools you feel would be necessary for your move.
Similar to the overnight bag, you will also want to have any bedding you need separate from the rest of your belongings. Depending on the time of day you arrive at your new home, the only thing you may want to do is have some food, shower, and go to sleep. If that’s the case, you don’t want to have to go through your boxes just to find pillows, blankets, and a clean set of sheets. Instead, keep the necessities separate so everything is in one labeled box that you can open, make the bed, and settle in for a good night’s sleep in your new home.
