Items You Should Throw Out When You Downsize

When you downsize your home, the idea is to eliminate useless junk and make room for your most essential belongings in a new and smaller home. Many people choose to downsize when they get older and no longer have children living at home, but there are many reasons why a couple or an individual may choose to downsize their living space.

At Grasons Co Estate Sale Services, we can help eliminate some of the stress caused by downsizing your home. In order to make room for everything in your limited space, you’ll likely need to sell a few things, first. Luckily, our team at Grasons has more than 20 years in the estate sale industry, and we are more than happy to lend a hand in any way that we can. Whether you’re in need of help with inventory and the actual sale of your items or you want us to help you every step of the way, we are here to serve your needs. In the meantime, continue reading below to learn what items you should throw out as you begin sorting through your belongings.

Old Clothes

Have you spent your life buying new clothes and adding them to your closet or dresser without sorting out the old clothes? It’s normal to add to your wardrobe over time, but if you’re planning to downsize your home, it may be time to downsize your wardrobe, as well.

Instead of simply throwing your clothes in a bag and moving them to your new home, make sure you take some time to sort through them. If you have articles of clothing that you haven’t worn in over a year, or that you know don’t fit and you’ll probably never wear them, make the decision to either donate them or throw them away. That way, you can make room for the clothes you know you’ll wear.

Decorative Knick-Knacks

Decorative knick-knacks can be a fun way to add a personal touch to your home, but there’s a good chance that there are at least a few that you can donate or sell as you get ready to downsize. Do you have two of the same ceramic pigs? Do you have a decorative dish that has a chip in it? As you go through your belongings, make the conscious decision to eliminate any duplicates, knick-knacks that are broken, or even pieces that you kept just because. Your new home will have much less space to display your decorations, so you want to make sure you save room for only the knick-knacks you truly care about.

Unused Furniture

If it’s just you or you and a spouse living in your home, there’s a good chance that there are some pieces of furniture that haven’t been used in years. Larger homes tend to have more furniture than smaller homes, as people tend to buy some pieces just to make the space feel more cozy. However, it’s unlikely that you will need more than one or two side tables in your new home or a sectional couch and three arm chairs in your living room. You may even have some exercise equipment that you told yourself you would use that has slowly turned into a very expensive coat rack. People are always in the market for lightly used furniture, so if there are a few or more pieces that you’ve hardly ever used, it’s best to try and sell them instead of trying to find a space for them in your new home.

Bulk Goods

Stores that sell items in bulk can be a blessing, especially for items such as toilet paper, laundry detergent, and other household items that you use frequently. It’s no secret that when you’re living in a house with a lot of people, you go through bulk items quickly, but when you live in a house with just one or two people, buying in bulk isn’t quite as necessary. With that in mind, bulk items can take up a lot of room in your home. Consider throwing some away or gifting to others who can use them to help free up some space in your home!
